The use of
diacritics and/or foreign characters in genealogy programs
Most genealogy computer programs do not have
the possibility to insert diacritics and/or foreign characters, if
you do not have them on your computer keyboard.
If you have ancestors from non-English speaking
countries and you find diacritics or foreign characters in the
family names, you may use the ASCII code to insert these characters
into your genealogy computer program.
Lucky if you use the PAF-program or one of the
modern genealogical programs on the market. You can
download the PAF-program for free from the
LDS-church webpage.
In the PAF-program you press the F7 key and
choose your character you need for your records.
If you still use an older version of a
genealogy computer program you should use the above mentioned ASCII
code.
Following a list with the most common foreign
characters (for the input as ASCII code).
Please be aware that not all characters are
possible to input with the ASCII code.
To input a character, press the Alt-key, and
type the decimal number on the 10-key pad. Make sure the
NumLock key is on.
